OrangeMesh hits beta - OrangeMesh 0.3b

We’re pleased to announce today the release of OrangeMesh 0.3b, the beta version of the open-source network management dashboard for ROBIN-based wireless mesh networks. This project is supported by Orange Networking, implemented by students at UNC-Chapel Hill, and designed for the benefit of community wireless initiatives worldwide. You can pick up a copy at our temporary project page.

With the release of the Beta, OrangeMesh has graduated from the Software Engineering class at UNC and entered the real world. For me personally, developing OrangeMesh was an excellent learning experience and taught me a great deal about working with others on a software team and about the dynamics of open source development.

We’ve had good success with this project so far. ROBIN enthusiasts around the world have been using OrangeMesh and improving it with their feedback, and several groups have expressed interest in using OrangeMesh once it reaches maturity. While OrangeMesh started out as a project to support free, open, community-based wireless — and so it will remain — several companies are looking to use OrangeMesh to support their own mesh deployments, which is excellent news for the entire community due to the kind of support commercial organizations can give to open source projects.

OrangeMesh is going to have a permanent home in a few days, and we’ll make another post when everything is set up. Until then, thanks for supporting OM!
